Newfoundlanders refer to the section of the Trans-Canada Highway running across their island as the 'TCH'. This ongoing project documents the exotic or mundane landscapes, gas stations, restaurants, roadside businesses, signs and paint stripes that collectively yield a unique sense of place that anyone who has driven the length of the island will find familiar. A companion piece to Newfoundland Railway (2009) and New Industries (2005), this series complements my study of major changes that have taken place in Newfoundland during the past 60 years.
