Unsettled (1997 - 2000)

Unsettled #47

48 black-and-white, silver-gelatin photographs printed from medium- or large-format negatives. This series depicts the physical remnants of Newfoundland coastal communities abandoned as part of a post-confederation governmental attempt to engineer the economy. The series uses the disintegrating structures as metaphors for the loss of place resultant from the abandonment and, along with its companion publication, Places Lost: In Search of Newfoundland's Resettled Communities (2003), explores the semantic potentials of words and images to represent such loss.
